Grade II listed Royal Mail shed to be turned into luxurious home

  • The Grade II listed former Royal Mail goods shed is now on the market, after Birmingham City Council approved the proposals for it to be turned into a luxurious 5,468 sq ft home.

    If you fancy living in a new, deluxe home that has Sutton Coldfield Royal Mail / railway history at its heart, then this property could be just for you.

    The Grade II listed former Royal Mail goods shed, in Thomas de Beauchamp Lane, just off Tudor Hill, is now on the market, after Birmingham City Council approved the proposals for this former hive of industry to be turned into a luxurious 5,468 sq ft home, complete with cinema room and 1,162 sq ft garden.

    Venture Holdings, which is undertaking the restoration, wants to transform this unusual building , which dates back to 1879 and sits within the new Bishops Manor development, into a six-bedroom, six-bathroom family home.

    The shed retains a host of original features and, because of the protected status of the building, architects BPN, which has drawn up detailed plans for its renovation, are keen to work with and enhance them.

    According to the plans submitted by the architect to the city council, disturbance from the nearby Sutton Park Railway Line, a freight line, will be minimised because the new ground floor will be suspended on anti-vibration rubber pads and the floor separated from the existing walls.

    To increase the light further, the architects plan to add two new windows – a near full-height one on the west elevation and a smaller window at the first floor level on the east side.

    The ground floor will combine the living area and dining space , plus a large kitchen will be fitted, behind which will be a small single storey pod built in for storage and a pantry.

    The bedrooms and cinema are planned as two separate freestanding two-storey “pods”, each with their own staircase, at the either end of the property, with four bedrooms, including the master suite with dressing room on the ground floor, and two further bedrooms and the cinema/games room on the first floor.

    Because the “pods” are free standing within the original building, they could removed if necessary in the future, which would have minimal impact on the fabric of the building.

    Outside, the new owners will have a large garden, plus off-street parking that will accommodate four cars.

    There are three ways to buy:

    * 1. The Good shed as it stands today with a residential planning consent to convert to a luxurious ‘‘Grand Design-style’’ six-bedroom house – £500,000

    * 2. The Goods shed, fitted out to first fix to stage ready for internal finishing with all structural building works completed – guide price £800,000.

    * 3. The completed six-bedroom dwelling, finished to a high specification – £1,000,000.

We bought a shed from ShedsFirst, it was easy to find the right size from the range on their website and the ordering process was simple. The shed arrived on time and was well packaged to prevent damage. The quality of the wood is really good. The only area that we cannot wholeheartedly praise is that the assembly instructions could have been clearer. But on the whole, we definitely recommend them.<br />
